What we think:
Spring 1945. World War II is drawing to a close and the Russians and Germans are fighting through war-torn Berlin. The Russian secret service is trying to steal atomic bomb technology from the collapsing German Army. An American elite sniper disguised as a German and working alone, you must use your stealth and sniping skills to stop Stalin's forces from controlling the world's nuclear technology. Only you will be able to stop the Cold War... and only time and your rifle will tell...
First let's get something straight: hiding in a dark place waiting for the enemy to come and get them takes up very little of a real sniper's time; snipers are people who move into position to get the perfect shot, lay down support fire for friendly troops, and, once they've got a few shots off, they move, getting into another position. This may be unknown to snipers in online shooters, but it's true, and it's what you'll be doing in the highly enjoyable long-range shooting that is Sniper Elite.
Sniper runs a simple formula: third person moving (and machine gun shooting) and first person sniping through a ton of missions based in a war-torn, deserted and mostly demolished German cities basically doing the stuff above: supporting resistance troops, infiltrating an enemy base to find important documents, assassinating important people, some set to complete in a specific time, and yes, you will be required to hide in a dark place and put a few grams of lead through a few dozen throats at almost a mile away, but just for fun like.
Sniper does all this to perfection. Sniper Elite lets you really take on all the challenges of sniping, making you take into account things like bullet drop for distance and elevation, your pulse and your breathing to steady the rifle and, if you want to, the wind that is blowing around. All of which affect the bullet trajectory, so a head shot from a long way away is very rewarding when you pull it off. As an award for pulling off perfect shots the game goes into bullet-cam, where the camera follows the bullet in slow-mo from the barrel of your rifle moving around it as it eats up the distance to your target getting into position just behind the bullet as it enters your foe, creating a large hole, a slowed down yell and blood and small pieces of bad-guy. It can be a bit gory and is not recommended for the faint of heart. It's so gory that the German Sniper Elite players aren't allowed it, it make you feel glad to be British.
Sniper really lets you feel that your part of the fight: immersive sounds (that can cover the sounds of your shots if you time it right) and deserted streets that really give the feeling of a war-torn Germany. And the reality continues with the AI; the bad guys will work as a team to lay down fire and flank you, they'll use cover, try and help a wounded comrade (letting you get a two for one if you're good enough), hide and snipe. So getting into the perfect position to take down all the bad guys before they work out where you're shooting from is essential.
Though great in single-player, Sniper Elite makes for a great multiplayer game, and thanks to a great points scheme where you get twice the points for picking up a dog-tag of a fallen enemy, it's not all hiding in the bushes. With loads of people online and stat tracking by gamespy account, multiplayer is definitely something that you need to try out.
So steady your aim and get ready to put that lump of lead through a skull over a mile away.
